J. Michael Crooks, FSA, MAAA
Mr. Crooks has 30 years of experience in the life and health insurance industries including consulting as well as a number of actuarial positions within insurance companies. For the past 22 years he has focused primarily on health insurance with an emphasis on reserving for health insurance liabilities.
Recent Experience
- Insurance Department Audits – aided both the Kansas and Nebraska Insurance Departments in Triennial audits. Reviewed the actuarial liabilities in support of others who performed the rest of the audit.
- Pricing – while Chief Actuary at Benefit source was responsible for pricing and ongoing financial performance of an $800 million block of group insurance.
- Appointed actuary for Indiana based HMO.
- Rate filings – as pricing actuary for Pyramid Life was responsible for pricing, rate filings and experience exhibits for individual health business in 40 states.
- Reserving – Works with a large integrated delivery system in the Chicago area setting their monthly liability for claim reserves.
- External Audits – While at Ernst & Young, audited approximately 40 health company’s actuarial liabilities annually in support of the auditors and continues to provide audit support in conjunction with BKD and BDO.
- Modeling – has worked to develop new, innovative methods of determining health claim reserve liabilities.
